Taking Three Cameras Up To Campus As The Sun Sets
A while back it looked like it was going to be a great sunset so I took my camera bag up to campus with three cameras in it. One of my first stops was the Purdue arch by the Union. With the sun still in the sky I moved off to the side to try something that I hadn’t done yet for some reason. The fun thing about photography is that you always have more options. It seems like no matter how many times you have photographed a subject you can still find another way to do so. I really like the composition that I came up with. It was fun trying each of my three cameras out to see what results it would give me.
The Fuji AX-3 With Flic Film Aurora 800
My new favorite camera is the Fuji AX-3. I got it from Camera Outfitters for very cheap, but it has been my go to film camera. I only have a 50mm lens for it though so for photos like this I have to think a little differently. I really like how this one turned out though. With film you have a lot more latitude to work with when photographing into the sun.
The Sony A7RIII And My Sony 24-105mm Lens
This is the combo that I walk around with the most. My Sony A7RIII has become my go to walk around lens after my A7RIV had the fall last summer. Paired with the Sony 24-105mm lens it really gives me a great range of images that I can make on my walks. Here I knew exactly what I would get from it when I made the image. With my film cameras I am never too sure. I really know this combo well, and this is an image that I really like. I flipped the camera to make this portrait oriented photo. I really like how this one turned out.
Canon AE-1 And Reflx Lab 250D
I was really excited to see what this combination would give me. The film was one that I had never made photos with before, but I had heard good things. I did not get many usable images from the roll as it appeared that a large portion of the middle of the roll had been exposed to the light. I would understand it if that happened at the beginning or the end of the roll. I would probably even blame myself. Here though with it being in the middle I can only assume that it happened as it was put together in the factory. I still have another roll of this film, and I hope that I get better results with it. This is a fun image for me, and it is very different from anything that I have ever done here.
Wrapping Things Up
This is the part where I tell you which photo I like the best. In this case they all have things that make them different from each other. The Fuji photo is nice, but it is a bit too tight for me. The photo with the Canon AE-1 is nice, but everything with that roll of film has a hazy look to it. It might be part of the scanning process. I don’t have my negatives back yet, but I will be interested to look at them to see what happened in this process. That really leaves the photo made with my mirrorless camera. I really like this image. In fact I couldn’t wait for this post to post the photo on Instagram. I pretty much posted it right away. It is my favorite of the three for sure. I still like this exercise, and you will see more of it in the future.
