What Bird Is This?

Photographing The Dickcissel At Prophetstown State Park

Saturday after baseball I went out looking for a couple of birds that end up at Prophetstown State Park in the summer. One of them is the dickcissel. I found this bird amongst some really cool thorns. You don’t often find a bird on such a cool perch, but here I really lucked out. The bird was also very cool with me being near it. I needed to move a few steps to the side to put its head into a clear spot, and I was sure that it was going to fly away while I did that. It did not though. It let me make the photo, and I am happy that it did.

Getting Out There

I don’t make bird photos as much as I used to anymore. It is great practice for most kinds of photography because you have to think on your feet and it is not the easiest to put focus on such little birds. To make good photos though you need to spend a lot of time in the field. I just haven’t been willing to put that time in lately. Here I lucked out and made a photo with limited time spent. That might just get me back out there sooner rather than later.
