The Old Monticello Public Library

The Old Monticello Public Library

One building that I remembered from my previous visit to Monticello over a decade ago was this old library. It is now the White County Historical Society, but was once the main library for the town. It is another Carnegie library which is becoming a trend on this blog. I have enjoyed finding these old buildings and reading a little bit about them. This one was built in 1907 in part because of a $10,000 donation from Andrew Carnegie. It is interesting to see how these old libraries would get different amounts of money from the Carnegie fund. I am started to wonder what that process was like to get a loan.

The End Of Library Week

This week my afternoon theme has been the library. It has been fun looking at a key building in every town. When I was growing up the library meant much more to the town than maybe it does today. It was the place to get your information before we had a computer in the house. Now these old Carnegie libraries are a fun look back at what used to be in these smaller towns. Next week I want to take a look at another fixture in every country seat. The courthouse.
