Isaac White In White County

Col. Isaac White In Tippecanoe County

Isaac White is an interesting story to me. I think it was part of the times the you would drop everything to come to the next state over from you and get into a conflict. That is exactly what Isaac White did. The Illinois militia that he was in charge was not needed in the battle at Prophetstown so he came over on his own and enlisted as a private. He fought for his friend Governor Harrison and under another close friend Joseph Daveiss. He would fall at the battle next to Daveiss and they were buried together. As I stared at this statue I had to wonder what motivated this man to drop everything to join a battle? He was by all accounts a successful geologist. What was it about this battle that made him join up as a private and ultimately lose his life?

Which White County?

Isaac White has two counties named after him. One here in Indiana where I made this photo, and one in Illinois. Here in Indiana I believe that the county was named after him because of his sacrifice on the battlefield. In Illinois I think he is best known for giving Illinois more land on Lake Michigan. I don’t know if it was the man or the times, but it is pretty cool that this man has two counties named after him in two states for two different reasons.
