Reading The Sunday Comics

A Chance To Reach The Sunday Comics

Last summer while in Cincinnati my little one and I went for a walk on Sunday morning. We passed this building with a huge comic strip on it. Growing up when I did the Sunday comics were a big deal. It was the reason to read the paper on Sunday. Of course my little one knows that there are comic strips, but they are just an antique to her. It was fun to stop and read this one though. This week I am looking at some murals that I have seen in my travels so this photo had to be posted. I like how the antenna at the top of the building shows the technology that kind of put the comics in the paper away for the most part. The Sunday comics were replaced by the Saturday morning cartoons in my childhood. This is a simple photo, but one that I like a lot.

Winsor McCay And Little Nemo

The comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland was made by Winsor McCay who spent some time in Cincinnati. He came to the town painting murals and looking for any work. He ended up making comics for two of the local papers including the Cincinnati Enquirer. He freelanced for Life magazine as well while in the Queen City. Of course as he started to blow up he was snatched by the New York papers and moved there. That is where he produced his most famous work Little Nemo In Slumberland which is seen above. Cincinnati does a great job of using these larger than life murals to help people learn about some of the famous artists that have passed through Cincinnati.
