Weekend Baseball Recap

Another Weekend Photographing Purdue Baseball

This weekend I had a couple of games on the books to photograph the Purdue baseball team. That is some of the easier work that I can do because this team is so much fun to watch play. Even in a loss Sunday they made it fun. Baseball is a fun sport. If you are having fun playing it good things will happen. This Purdue club is fun to watch. This weekend against Iowa will be a big test for them. I plan on being at Alexander for as much of the action as I can this weekend. It is hard to believe that I have been making photos in this park for a decade now. If not for the pandemic it would have been even longer. It seems like not that long ago that I was walking around with my little yellow pass like I was in Wayne’s World backstage. It is fun to still get to do this for Purdue from time to time.

The G-Men

In the infield you have Gil, Gasser, and Gaffney that have been really fun to watch this season so far. They all hit the ball hard this weekend. At some point a fun old 90’s style photo has to be made with this group. Gill and Gasser have been fun to watch up the middle. I don’t know that I have seen more double plays turned than I have these first few home games. Gaffney at first has been fun to watch because you can see the work that he is putting in to playing the position. Before the game he is taking balls off the wall by himself or off the fungo bat. In between games of the doubleheader he is doing the same thing. You love to see a guy that is working hard get rewarded on the field. Not to be forgotten in the infield is Jo Stevens who despite not have a last name that starts with a G has been clutch so far this season.

Overusing The 300mm

With every new lens that I have bought I have gone through the period shortly after buying it where I use it way too much. That has been the case with the Sony 300mm lens. It really is giving me great results though so it is just feeding into me using it more. I played it safe for a while this week with the 200-600mm lens, but ditched it during the game to go to the 300. The 300mm paired with my 1.4x teleconverter turns into a 420mm lens. I spent a lot of time this weekend switching the tele on and off the lens. Ten years ago I bought my old 400mm lens. I called it the moneymaker at the time because it changed everything for me. This 300mm lens has done the same. Get used to seeing it this spring.

More Photos From The Weekend

You can see a gallery on the Purdue site from the weekend here. This weekend Ryan Long and I covered all of the games together. You have Ryan who came from the F1 world which is pretty cool. The Purdue photographer Andrew came from the Major League ranks which is also pretty cool. I spend most of my time photographing rec league softball so it is always cool to work with people that came from the big leagues. You can view the gallery here.

What Is Next?

The Purdue baseball team has four more home games this week coming up. They have a midweek Wednesday along with a three game set with Iowa this weekend. As of right now I have nothing on the books for the weekend so I will go back into prospecting mode. Iowa has some big arms coming in so I will probably be at the games making photos to put out on the wire hoping that they get picked up for one reason or another. It is a more laid back way to photograph, but I am getting used to it.
