A Rewarding Eagle Catch

A Bald Eagle With A Nice Catch

Going to watch the eagles can be one of two things usually. Most days I go down there and have a staring contest with them as they sit in the trees. On rare occasions though they will fly and catch something. On even rarer days they will catch whatever is in the water right in front of me. That is what happened on this day. For what seemed like forever I saw this fish thrashing about on top of the water. It was in distress for sure. Once it stopped moving this younger eagle came down from its perch and snapped it up. It was almost too close to me, but I don’t know if that is a thing. I stayed nearly zoomed in to make this photo. I was at about 500mm of the 840 or so I get with my tele converter on the camera. If it was close to me I wanted to be tight on it. I didn’t care if a wing or two was clipped off. I wanted to be in close to the action. I am really happy with how this sequence turned out.

The Full Sequence

Below is my full sequence from this catch. As I said above I will sit forever sometimes waiting for an eagle to grab this fish that is in front of me. That rarely happens. When it does happen though it makes it all worthwhile. Wildlife photography is about accepting failure sometimes. You go out with no results. What makes it so addicting though is when it does work like it did here.
