My Favorite Tennis Photos Of 2023
This year was a big year for tennis for me. I started the year off with a couple of matches for Xavier and then covered the Big Ten Tennis Championships at Purdue. After that I photographed the Harrison girls tennis team winning sectionals which added a little emotion to the mix. My final tennis match of 2023 was back out at Harrison with the boys tennis team.
My first match of the year had a little emotion in it between Purdue and Xavier. The two teams seemed pretty evenly matched so they had to fight for every point. Here you could see the emotion bubbling during a doubles match. I kept on this player as she ramped up the emotion, and after a big point I made the photo that I had been waiting on.
I really like this anthem photo before the Xavier men’s team took on Purdue. The flag inside of the Schwartz complex makes it easy to incorporate it into photos. During the anthem it is a little easier.
I think that I may just dump the rest of the emotion photos right here. I was trying to decided between a few, but they all have something that I like about them so let’s just group them into one spot. This blog was built on the back of a course that taught capturing emotion. It is the thing that I love to photograph the most.
This photo was one that I worked on for a while. I loved those glasses, and I was obsessed with making this image. It all worked out with the angles and I was able to capture the hit on the racquet as well as in the glasses. When all of that works out in your favor it is a really good thing.
Speaking of working a photo I waited for a few points to make this photo the Ohio State team waiting for that clinching moment. I love how everyone has their own way to celebrate.
The emotion of winning the Big Ten Championship was amazing to document. Here two Michigan players kiss the trophy that they have worked so hard to earn.
I love these photos just after the hit. The look on the players face as they anticipate what will happen next is too good. Here are a few of my favorite photos from that moment from this past year.
The serve is a fun time to get a little creative. Here I worked my angle to make this photo during the Big Ten Championships. I really liked how this photo turned out.
Here is another fun serve photo. When the courts clear a bit you can get off to the side at Schwartz to make these images with the flag in them. When you are making images over a several day period you are trying to get anything different to offer up to the schools. That leads to fun images like this one.

Tennis is a harder sport to capture moments like this in. The courts are all alongside each other and you don’t want to disturb the action. You kind of have to luck into the photo. That is what happened here, and I am glad that I did.
When you are photographing a multi day tournament you look for anything different. A hint of a rainbow in the distance is just that. The rainbow was very faint, but I will take it.
Just before the forehand always looks like a jedi move to me. Here are a couple of my favorite photos of that jedi moment from this past year.

This was a fun moment after Harrison won the sectional title this past spring. They have done it enough that it is not a huge deal, but here a couple of players have some fun with the trophy.
I always close these best of posts with the thought that I will make better photos of that subject the next year. Without a tournament like the Big Ten coming to town this year that might be hard to do. Right now I only have one tennis match on my calendar for the coming year. That may change, but as I said in the post the amount of matches in a short span forces some creativity and helps make for great images. Most of my emotion photos came from that tournament emotion. Hopefully I can find more of that somewhere this year.
