Photographing The NCC Swimming And Diving Championships

Getting Back To The Pool

The last time that I was photographing at the pool was nearly two years ago. That is hard to believe. That year I photographed a meet for Indiana State, and then a fun few days photographing the Big Ten Championships at the pool. Last year I never made it to a swim meet. The swim deck is a busy space and if I was not photographing it for a purpose I decided to stay away. It was good to be back at the pool though, and I need to try and find my way into the Big Ten Championships that will be at Purdue later in the year.

Slowing Things Down

I usually break out the slow shutter speeds for the longer freestyle events. I have a button on my camera that automatically gives me a 1/15th of a second shutter speed. I use it all of the time, but for swimming it gets a little more use. I love how by slowing things down a little you can see just how violent of a sport this really is.

Finding Details

I love finding little details at swim meets. The action is cool, but these athletes and parents find ways to show pride. Here a Harrison mother has specialty earrings for her son. I love these little details as they break up the gallery a little big.

More Photos From The Day

Speaking of the gallery you can find it here. I was on assignment for the Journal and Courier again. It has been really fun working for the local paper and getting to do things like this that I normally would not have been able to do. Give the gallery a look.
