Wearing Sycamore Blue Again
Yesterday with Indiana State in town it was time to dust off the old Sycamore blue polo. Years ago I was looking for somewhere to help out. Purdue was kind of doing their own thing at the time and through a crazy little series of events I ended up making photos for Indiana State for a few years. They were the first college to really give me a chance so it was really cool to get to photograph them again. I have been to more Big Ten stadiums and arenas with them than anyone else.
A Fun Game To Photograph
This was a five point game at the half. Indiana State was right there, and I started thinking about what I could do if they pulled off the upset. Purdue ended up pulling away in the second half, but Indiana State had some runs that gave me some nice photos.
Having Some Fun With The New Features
Purdue has installed some new features in the stadium. I have been having some fun so far this year playing around with them. Part of the fun of making photos in the same building over and over is coming up with new ways to show the same thing. With some time I can play around and try and make the perfect picture from a particular spot. The home teams never run by this wall so today I was able to play around with it with Indiana State.
Figuring Things Out
I have taken a little time off from the free work lately while I am trying to figure out how to make things work on the sports side. Right now I make the vast majority of the money for the business away from sports, but the sports side is the one that takes the most money to keep going. This coming year I have to buy a new big lens and that is not cheap. I decided to step away from the free work for a while to try and think about things for a while. When we all came back from Covid I unlocked all my galleries because everyone was not doing so good. I was still selling a lot of prints so it was no big deal. Everybody kind of won that way. Now though those sales are few and far between and I think when the new year starts the galleries may be locked up again. Every arena that I walk into has someone else’s photos on the walls, and the senior portraits have dried up. I think the only way forward to make money is off the game action prints now. If you are an athlete that I have made portraits of then you are still all good. Your photos will be in the private folder that I have shared. It feels bad, but this is a business after all.
