College Football: Purdue vs. Illinois

Purdue Keeps The Cannon For Another Year

Saturday afternoon I was back in Ross Ade Stadium making football pictures. I will say that with pride every week that I get to do it. The first three home games were rough games to photograph. Saturday though was a different story. There was emotion and scores for days. When there are over 50 points on the board for both teams then you have had some chances to make some photos.

Ten Years Of Being On The Field

A couple of days ago I posted about it being ten years since the first game where I had a pass to make Purdue football photos. As I was on the field I tried to keep that in mind. Going back to that excited grown man getting to live out the dream. I always try and keep a little bit of that in my photos, but I wanted to try and infuse some of that joy into my photos this week. I don’t know if it worked, but I had a great time doing it. What better way to celebrate ten years of being on the field than to make some trophy photos?

Going Up High

For the night game if the sky looked like it would cooperate I had the thought of photographing the first quarter from the TV level of the press box. I ultimately decided against it because it was the only quarter where I would be able to use my 200-600mm lens. I wanted to make the most use of that time. So a week later I headed up there to make some photos. The light was really nice, and the shadows were amazing. I had a couple of photos in my head that never materialized, but it there is always another day. If we made every photo when we wanted to make it this wouldn’t be nearly as fun to do.

Local Boys Help Decide The Game

A couple of weeks ago I posted about a couple of local boys on the team. There are four former West Side football players dressing for Purdue right now. With one of them on kickoffs I am always guaranteed a photo of one of them to be in the gallery. This week though we had two of them make some big defensive plays when the team really needed them. They helped ice the game and keep the cannon at home. Above are a couple of photos of the local kids doing their thing on the field.

A Little Dusty

I will admit things got a little dusty when I saw Arnette Tiller and her family on the field to lead the crowd in Shout. Both Arnette and her husband Joe are a big reason why I am the Purdue fan that I am today. Heck she coined the phrase Boiler Up that we all say now. I love that the family had that moment on the weekend when the dedicated the Tiller Tunnel. I love that the tunnel is named after him, and I also think that a statue would look amazing up there. Imagine Joe always getting to have a great view of the play on the field.

A Beautiful Day For Football

It was a picture perfect day for football on Saturday. I really like the idea of this photo. I knew that I would be able to capture two of the three fireworks displays going up. What I didn’t think of and probably should have was the third display behind me would still show up in shadow form in my frame. I love how two of those shadows connect to the tunnel that the team is coming out of.

More Photos From The Day

It was a fun homecoming for many reasons. The football was good, the team kept the cannon, and also I was able to see some faces that I have not seen in quite some time. Below are a few bonus photos that I liked from the day.
