Local History: The Lincoln Bust At The Purdue Memorial Union

The Lincoln Bust At The Purdue Memorial Union

I never knew the exact reason why this statue is in the Purdue Union until I was researching this post. It was given to the Union by the class of 1904 in 1929. The bust has stayed in the Union ever since. Lincoln signed the land grant law that allowed Purdue to be formed. It makes sense that his bust is included among the university presidents on the main floor of the union. For nearly 100 years the bust has become an icon. The nose has become shiny from the students rubbing it for good luck before a test. I wish that I had known about this when I was a student. Things might have turned out differently.

A Little Bit About The Purdue Memorial Union

Part of the fun about campus are the little things that have a little history to them. It is fun to look at the large buildings and icons of campus, but it can be just as much fun to look at these little pieces of campus. My little one always asked exactly why this was at the Union, and now I have a good answer for that. The whole purpose of this post once a week is to learn something new about my area. So far it has opened my eyes to a lot of things that I had no idea about, and also given me directions to take this part of the blog in the future.
