A Champ is Crowned at Kansas Speedway
Last night Mason Mitchell became the 2014 ARCA Series Champion when he took the green flag of the race at Kansas Speedway. I saw Mason earlier in the season in a great race at Winchester Speedway. He finished second after some beating and banging on the last lap of the race. After a few second place finishes in a short span Mason broke out finally to win a race shortly after Winchester. Even more impressive though is the series title. I like ARCA because it is old school racing. No gimmicks at the end of the year. The car that is the most consistent the entire year wins the championship. That in my mind is how racing should crown a champion. Mason was the driver that showed the entire season how good he was, and he was rewarded with some hardware last night.
The Last Lap Pass at Winchester
This may not be a great memory for Mason, but it should be for a couple of reasons. The first is that he took his second place finishes and used them as fuel to win the title. The second is that even though Brandon Jones attempted to spin him out to win the race, Mason kept it together to finish second. He did a fantastic job of keeping the car straight in order to make it to the finish line. This is one of my favorite photos of the year. The moment where the race was won. I am sure that it will end up in my end of the year countdown.
