Farewell to the Captain

Saying Goodbye to Paul Konerko

Right now most of baseball is watching the last games of Derek Jeter. On the South Side of Chicago another great baseball player is finishing out his career as well. Paul Konerko has been a solid first baseman for the White Sox for years now. He has played the game the way that it should be played, and I will miss seeing him when I go to the ballpark. I think that I have really connected with Paulie because he reminds me a bit of myself. We are both slow men who will never win many footraces. He has worked hard though to make sure that he has the tools that he needs to become the great player that he is. As with Mark Beuhrle I will be in the stadium when the White Sox unveil the statue for Paulie. It will be good to see #14 in the ballpark again.

I said my goodbye to Paulie in mid August when I attended what I knew was my last game of the season. Paul was facing Mark Buehrle to start the game, and then tied it with a clutch hit late. That may be why I like the above photo so much. You can see him running to first on his single while Avasail Garcia scores in the background. The fans were hoping to see Paulie to it once again, and they exploded when he did. I think that this photo works on a couple levels.

A Great Tribute Video

Below is a video that the White Sox released yesterday for Paulie. It is really well done. I hope that you enjoy.
