Shooting Football Again
I have not shot football since I left Memorial Stadium last season as the Hoosiers claimed the Old Oaken Bucket. It was great to be back shooting football, although the rust was very apparent. The scrimmage last night was a weird affair that without a sheet telling me what was going on was hard to follow. Early on the teams would quickly swap ends leaving me sprinting to the other end of the field. Without the normal rules of football it was not as fun to make the images. Part of what drives me as a sports photographer is anticipating the action and getting the shot. Last night it seemed as if shots were being handed to me as the teams had multiple tries inside of the 10 yard line. I tried to make photos of things that I normally would not make. A photo like the one above of West Lafayette defensive lineman Dylan Trent is one of them. I would just key in on a player, and watch them through the play. There is a saying that holding occurs on every play. Looking through my viewfinder I agree with that statement. It is usually not as bad as above though. The funny thing is that no flag was thrown on this play.
Bonus Photos
Last night I really did not make that many photos. I shot when I thought I had something good, but I really held back when the action was too far away. At one point I even let a young fan use my 300mm lens to get in a bit closer to the action. I did manage to get a few nice shots though. Here are a couple more that I liked from the night. Next week when the game means something I think that I will be a bit more into it, and the shots should come a little more.
