The Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls at OUTFest
Last night I shot a bout unlike any that I have shot so far. It was just a scrimmage, but anytime you can shoot a sport in a unique setting I am all for it. Watching roller derby in the streets of Lafayette was a very cool and unique experience. I think that it distracted me a bit from the task at hand though. I kept trying to show the setting in every shot. The action kind of took a backseat to what background that I had. I did manage to get a few decent action shots as well though.
Shooting in Mixed Light
Of course the scrimmage was located in a location with very mixed light. Dappled light from the trees littered the track. I threw my speed light onto my camera, but it just made a small dent even at full power. It did give me a chance to make some photos though that I normally would not have been able to make without it. I wish that I had a light with more power on me to get the scene in at the same time as the bright background. In the end I made the best of the situation with what I had.
Bonus Photos
As with most of my bout photos I have put a gallery up on my Facebook page here. I have included a couple of bonus shots below though as well.
