A Great Egret Fishing at Assateague Island

Some Birding While on Assateague Island

While I was on Assateague Island I saw a few species of birds. I normally don’t spend a lot of time photographing birds, but here I was striking out with the horses so I felt that I needed to photograph something. In the end I found the horses, but I am glad that I spent some time photographing the birds as well. This Egret was just sitting on the railing looking down into the water. I assumed that it was fishing. I think that it sees many people as my presence did not seem to bother him at all. I was able to get fairly close to make this photo. I did a weird walk towards him shooting as I went in case he flew away, but that was not the case. Sometimes I would love to see what I look like on a shoot. This was one of those times.

Editing This Photo in Lightroom 5

This was a simple edit in Lightroom. I made some minor adjustments to the highlights and exposure to start off. I then added some clarity to just the wood going down the right side of the photo. To bring the eye in a bit closer I also used the radial filter to lighten the area around the bird just slightly. I wanted it to be a bit more visible than anything else in the photo. All in all a very easy edit that only took a couple of minutes.
