Remember the Beaches

Photo of the Day

Today is the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. Seventy years ago men stormed the beaches of Normandy so that we could enjoy time on the beach today. I made this photo last Sunday just after the sun went down on Lake Freeman. I had some photos of the lake, but when I saw that the rope lights were casting light onto the flag I knew I had my photo. I went upstairs to make this photo.

The thing about D-Day is that even though it was 70 years ago it is still on the minds of the men who stormed the beaches. On Memorial Day I saw a veteran on TV being asked about the day. He was meant to talk about the Medal that he earned on the day, but the memories overcame him, and he could not talk about his experience. Just seeing the pain that he was still in shows you that the war may end, but the pain does not. You can watch movies that claim to be authentic or read about the day, but I don’t think that anything can allow someone who was not there to have an idea of what happened. A horrific day, but one that helped turn the tide of the war.

Technical Data

I processed this image with a new preset from a photographer James Brandon. He is one that I have followed for a while, and I stumbled upon his preset package while watching some of his videos on YouTube. James is a great photographer, and I liked the idea behind some of his presets. You can view some of his work here, and you can also check out his preset bundle. From what I have seen so far it is worth the money. The photo above was processed using the blue-yellow polarizer filter. I felt that it pulled the colors of the sunset that I wanted quite well.
