A Bunch of Wins

Photo of the Day

Yesterday I shot a new event for me. I don’t have a lot of experience shooting track and field to begin with, but I had not even seen the hammer throw before stepping foot onto the track yesterday. I did some quick recon during the day to at least get a feel for the sport, but nothing beats seeing it in person. Luckily I had a few warm up rounds to watch to see exactly what is going on. Purdue has a great one in Dani Bunch. She won the event by 17 feet. She is really in a league of her own. I was able to make a few nice pictures of her on the day. The one thing that really gets me about shooting track is the lack of a good background. Someone is always standing right in the way. I moved around a bit at first to try and clear it up, but then someone else would get in the way. I think the only way to shoot an event like this with a clean background is from the air.

After shooting the hammer throw I moved over to the Boilermaker Softball Complex to shoot the first game of the final series there. The girls will be moving to a new field next year so this is yet another historic final home stand. I just got to the game in time to see it begin. Purdue really took advantage of the wind blowing out as all three of their runs came via the long ball. They won 3-0 over a very solid Minnesota team that came into the game ranked 12th in the country. Purdue only had four hits, but as I said two home runs make a big difference. Purdue pitcher Lilly Fecho only allowed two hits, and she picked up the complete game win.

Today I have a couple of hours of track followed by the second game of the series between Purdue and Minnesota. From there I will head to the fairgrounds to shoot the final bout of the mini season for the Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls. After around 12 hours of shooting my day will be over. Needless to say I may have a little content for this blog over the next few days.

Bonus Photos

As per usual I have included a few bonus shots from both events that I covered yesterday.

Bonus Video

I tried another time lapse again yesterday. I decided to try and see what an entire game looks like from the outfield of the stadium. I mounted the Go Pro onto the center field stand to shoot. As I thought the players and fans were awfully small, but I was able to get the storm clouds moving through. Today I hope to mount the Go Pro onto the press box somewhere to see what I can get there. The one obstacle may be the photographers stand on the third base side. Great now I am getting in the way of my own shots! Anyway below is the minute long video of the game that I made.
