Wildlife Paparazzi

Photo of the Day

While I had the Tamron 200-500 lens I tried my hand at a little wildlife photography. I really don’t get out to do this enough, but I have fun doing it. I snuck up on this heron along the Wabash River with the intent on making a nice picture of it. The heron seemed to sense me, but it did give me a nice profile look before going behind some weeds. Now that I own some longer glass I really need to get out and shoot some wildlife.

Technical Data

As I said earlier this was shot with the 200-500mm lens that I rented from Camera Outfitters here in Lafayette. I knew that the lens was too slow for sports, but how would it perform capturing wildlife? The lens really was hit or miss. I missed a couple of pictures early because it was very slow to focus. For this photo though it gave me a nice crisp photo of the heron through some weeds with no problem. I was shooting it with my 60D that day to get a little further reach, and I did not have my battery grip on the camera. I think the slow focusing was caused by the slow nature of the small battery in the 60D.
