Photo of the Day
Last night was another extra inning affair at Alexander Field. It was a weird game before extra innings started. Ohio State scored their runs after the umpire at second base got in the way of a double play ball that would have ended the inning. That gave OSU the 3-0 lead that it looked as if was all that their starter needed. The Boilers could not even get a hit off of him. Then it started for Purdue. They had a big inning included the first ever inside the park home run that I have seen in person to tie up the game. That was all that either team could do until Kyle Wood who did not even play last weekend delivered the hit that scored Cody Strong to win the game in the 13th inning. The team went out towards second to mob Wood which I captured above. I love those moments, but the OSU shortstop showing the pain of defeat just makes the picture that much better. I have now seen three extra inning games in the past two weeks with each one getting longer. In 2006 my baseball season started with a 4 1/2 inning game where I felt as if I had been robbed. That year I seemed to be at every extra inning game the White Sox played including the 19 inning marathon. Maybe that is in the cards for this season as well.
Bonus Photos
Below I have included a couple of bonus photos. The first is the picture that I thought for sure would be the photo of the day until the Boilers walked it off. It is of Purdue outfielder Jeff Evak heading back to the dugout after hitting his inside the park home run. At that point in the day the sun had gone down behind the field casting shadows onto the playing field. Just a sliver of light came through illuminating the player that just had the big hit. I thought the natural spotlight was very appropriate. The second picture is of Boiler second baseman Cody Strong getting some air. For some reason I really liked the look of this photo.
