The Sun Dog

Photo of the Day

Yesterday we woke up to temperatures below zero. As I write this it is currently -12 degrees with wind chills taking it down to -36 degrees. This morning as the sun came up it was reflecting in such a way that initially it looked like three suns. As it rose the bright spots on the sides turned into multi colored reflections. It was then that I noticed that for some reason a rainbow appeared. This phenomenon is called a sun dog. Had I seen it a bit earlier This would have been much more amazing, but I caught it a bit late. I hope that I see this again someday when I can capture it a bit better, but I don’t need it to be cold enough to see it everyday.

Technical Data

This photo really did not need a lot of work. I purposely shot it a bit underexposed in camera so that the rainbow would show up a little better. Inside of Lightroom I just upped the vibrance a little to get this look. I also adjusted the clarity and the blacks to make it a bit darker. Below you can see a version of this photo with a bit more processing done to it.
