The Spike

Photo of the Day

Today I thought that I would share a photo from the Boiler Volleyball match Friday night that was in Mackey Arena. Every year they pack the arena for one night. I had never made the event, but made a decision to attend it to try a few things. One of those things was a chance to shoot the match from a higher vantage point. I really tried a few things in this respect. I think that with a very long lens some of my locations would have worked much better. The shot above was taken from the media table next to the court. I think that I could have gotten the same angle in Holloway Gymnasium, but I like the idea of getting the Keady Court logo in the shot. The problem with using a wide angle to show the entire scene is that the players become small. To really make this photo as dynamic as I would have liked I would have had to be just in front of the Keady Court logo on the court. I don’t think the Big Ten Network would have liked me out there though.

Technical Data

I decided to spice things up a bit here. Instead of just normally processing this like a normal sports photo I decided to try and add a little to it. I applied the Matt Kloskowski preset HDR Look (medium) to it. A slight exposure and highlight adjustment was also performed. I then cropped the image to get rid of a couple distracting elements. I like the look that this gave me. It was kind of different to try this on a sports photo. Of course I then applied some of the same techniques to a few of the football photos that I took the next day.

  1. Great shot and I like the way you have edited it. Shooting in low light is always so much more challenging. what kind of ISO did you use for this? I am a newby and just getting used to playing with the settings, so forgive me for asking basic questions.

    1. I was at 4000 with the Mark III. It really does well in low light. If you click on any of my photos it will open up the photo in SmugMug. From there it has an i icon that gives you all of the metadata for any of my photos if you are interested in that.
