Listening In

Photo of the Day

Last night I shot roller derby to end a long day. I shot a college football game during the day, and then I drove straight to the Brawl House in order to set up my gear. I will have more on the football game in the next couple of days. The thing that I love the most about roller derby is how close I can get. The girls don’t seem to mind that I am right over their shoulder while they are in a team meeting. With that in mind I can try and make some cool pictures showing things that most people don’t get to see. This one of team captain Sugar Magnolia giving some pre-game instructions I thought was pretty cool. You can see Sugar clearly explaining a point with a teammate getting a sneak peak at the list that Sugar is holding. You can also see the helmets and a tattoo of a couple of team members listening in. The shots like this are the ones that I love getting at the bouts.

More of the pictures from the bout last night can be found on my Facebook page here. You can see more like this along with some action shots. I also mounted a remote camera a little higher up to get a different view of the action. Not all of the remote shots worked, but I liked how you can see the blocking schemes better from higher up. I have a few ideas on how to make it better by the next home bout on October 5th.

Technical Data

I really did nothing to most of the derby pictures from last night other than a slight retouching. I was trying out the 5D Mark III during the bout, and I purposely cranked up the ISO near the end to test it out. A little noise reduction in Lightroom was all that I needed to make it go away. These were easy pictures to edit as the camera is amazing. They may have to pry it out of my hands to get it back.
