The View From the Ranch

Photo of the Day

Today I thought that I would go back about three years ago. I was staying at a ranch just before my brother got married near Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The ranch had some beautiful views that were in the process of getting torn down. Many trees were getting logged in what I later found out seems to be an epidemic out there. I liked my view here though, and was happy that I could capture this peaceful place with my camera.

Technical Data

This was an easy photo to process. As with a lot of my photos at the time I was not in love with it. Something was missing. Thanks to Lightroom I could process it a bit more. With this shot I was aiming for something close to what Ansel Adams would have done. I wanted a darker image with the shadow details in the shadows. Like most people who aim for Ansel I don’t think that this is quite there, but it is still a cool image. I used a preset by Matt Kloskowski called HDR in black and white (strong) in Lightroom to get close, and then tweaked the exposure and the black clipping to get where I needed to be. In the end I am very happy with the result.
