iPhone Friday: Setting Up the Shot

iPhone Photo

Monday night was a first for me. I took the team pictures for the Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls. I have taken many different kinds of pictures over the last couple of years, but this was a new experience for me. I have known for a while that I would be taking pictures for them, but it was nice to finally get to do the team picture. It seemed like it would be a daunting task getting everybody ready for the pictures. They were pros though, and it went very smoothly. This was not their first time getting their picture taken for sure. We had three setups to try, and this photo was one I took just before we started of the first setup. It was on the stage at the fairgrounds.

I like this shot because it shows my setup for the stage picture. I had a very tall ladder pretty far from the stage so that I could use my 70-200mm lens. I used that lens because it is the best lens that I have so I made some changes to how I would normally have shot this in order to use it. Just in front of the stage you can see my softbox containing my speedlight. That gave me the light in the middle of the picture that I needed. I actually used the stage lights of the arena to brighten up the outside of the picture. That was a lifesaver for me.

The big story of the day was my camera. When I went to test everything out in the afternoon it would not turn on. I assumed that it was just the batteries that were low so I put in the cartridge containing six fresh AA batteries. The camera would still not turn on. I went through a moment of panic wondering how I was going to pull of this shoot without a camera. I thought of renting one, but that was in Indy, and I might not get back in time going there. Luckily I found one of the AA batteries was in backwards so I was in business. I really need to invest in two more camera batteries so that this does not happen again. Everything turned out well though, and I will feature a picture from that shoot in the near future.

Technical Data

I took this with the Camera+ app which really is my go to app on the iPhone. A former co-worker showed me some vacation shots on it, and the pictures looked great. I have used it ever since. I applied the tilt shift filter to it to blur the top and bottom of the shot. It really gives the picture a little punch that it was lacking without it. I originally took this picture to post on my Facebook page, but I thought that it had an interesting story behind it, and that is what this blog is about.
