Sermon on the Pier

Photo of the Day

Today I thought I would share a post from the day that really got this whole thing started. I attended a Capturing True Emotion workshop at Navy Pier in June of 2011. The workshop was hosted by pros Val Westover and Stephanie Adriana. The pair did an excellent job running the workshop, and I really came away with a renewed sense of what I could do with a camera. I backed off from shooting sports as often as I had been, and I started to shoot everything that I felt was beautiful around me. The class was really a basic one, but at that point I needed something to refresh and inspire me. It was just right, and this blog came about a few months later as a way to channel my creative side.

I liked this picture right away on the camera. Val was telling us about something on our cameras, and we were told to shoot something to see what we could do. Everyone was chimping at the time except for the one woman who was looking up at Val. I really liked this shot, and I knew right away that it was a good one. I liked the idea of the sermon on the pier so it became today’s picture of the day.

Technical Data

The biggest thing that I did here was to eliminate the dust spots that were on my sensor at the time. I was given bad info about the cost to repair those spots so I was putting the job off. I really wish that I had though as I have a lot of work to do on the images that I took during that time period. This one was not too bad, and Lightroom has very easy tools to accomplish this. If I was going to sell a print I might take more time than I did here, but for the web the tools worked just fine. Other than that this was just a couple of adjustments to the shadows and highlights, and then export to post here.
