A Green Flame Over Chicago

Photo of the Day

Todays photo was taken in late March when we were in Chicago. We were walking on Michigan Boulevard after dinner as a fog rolled in up above the city. It created this beautiful glow around the Hancock Building. I really wanted this shot of it, but I didn’t have my tripod on my. I had my mini tripod, but I could not find a place to put it. It is only six inches tall, and things kept getting in the way. I found a trash can on a corner, and I used it to hold my tripod. I always liked this picture, but I felt that it was missing something. That may have kept it from becoming the picture of the day for that day. I processed it in Lightroom recently, and I liked the result. I wish that the trails from the car lights looked a bit better, but they still look pretty cool.

Technical Data

As I said this shot was processed in Lightroom. The first step was a small crop to make it square to delete some of the distracting elements. I then tweaked the highlight, clarity, and vibrance sliders as I have been doing. Since it was a long exposure at night I also used the noise reduction feature of the program to get rid of some of the noise from the city lights. In all it created a picture close to what I imagined when I shot in in the first place.

Kelby Worldwide Photowalk

Here is that part of the post where I talk about the photowalk that I am leading on campus after the Wisconsin game in October. The date is October 13th to be exact, and the walk will start at 4 o’clock est at the Neil Armstrong Statue in front of the Armstrong Hall of Engineering. Over  1,100 photowalks are planned around the world. If you are not near West Lafayette then you kind find a walk near you on the Kelby site. Sign up now to be part of this event. Over 22,000 walkers have already signed up so far. You don’t have to be a pro (I am far from it) to attend. Any kind of camera is welcome as well. Here are a few links to the various sites which promote the event. If you want to sign up you should do so on the Kelby site in order to be eligible for the prizes though.
