This Square is Bright

Photo of the Day

Part of the fun of learning my way around Lightroom has been saving some older pictures. This one from New York is one of them. I was an alright picture, but after a little tweaking it became a very nice picture. At the time I hated it because of the bus that came just as I snapped it. Now I look back, and I am glad that it is there. It gives the shot a little more flavor. We had spent the day in Cooperstown at the Baseball Hall of Fame. We got into the city late at night, and for my money that is when you should get there. We hit Times Square with all the other tourists, and I was instantly impressed. The rain that we dodged all the way into town made for some great pictures. I wish that I had the knowledge that I have now to capture that the right way, but in the end I like the shot. Maybe ignorance is bliss sometimes. I have a few more shots that I took in New York that will show up here over time. I want to kind of spread things out so that I don’t feature cities over and over. Of course Lafayette and LaPorte may end up getting their fair share of posts.

Technical Data

This shot as I said was dark, and not too colorful. I really did not have a good handle on my camera yet when I took this shot in 2008. In Lightroom I was able to bring out some of the color, and also bring out some of the reflections that the rain made possible. I adjusted the highlights, clarity, shadows, exposure, and vibrance on this image. This was a jpeg so I had a lot of noise. I had to also use the noise reduction feature in Lightroom to help get rid of it. I am sure that if you blow this up enough you will see it, but it is good enough for the web.

Kelby Worldwide Photowalk

Here is that part of the post where I talk about the photowalk that I am leading on campus after the Wisconsin game in October. The date is October 13th to be exact, and the walk will start at 4 o’clock est at the Neil Armstrong Statue in front of the Armstrong Hall of Engineering. Over  1,100 photowalks are planned around the world. If you are not near West Lafayette then you kind find a walk near you on the Kelby site. Sign up now to be part of this event. Over 22,000 walkers have already signed up so far. You don’t have to be a pro (I am far from it) to attend. Any kind of camera is welcome as well. Here are a few links to the various sites which promote the event. If you want to sign up you should do so on the Kelby site in order to be eligible for the prizes though.

  1. I like it, a lot. I have some photos from New York City I took in 2010 (jpeg) that I’ve been wanting to resurrect. But then again I have a LOT of photos I could probably revamp from my before Lightroom and RAW days . Thanks for the reminder.
