Day 364: Outside In And Inside Out

Photo of the Day

Over the course of the last year I have done things that I never would have dreamt of because of this little blog. Today was another good example. I was invited to the SAMARA house here in West Lafayette to take some pictures. The house was designed by the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and was built in the middle to late 1950’s. The house has many unique features, but this design on one of the porches really stuck with me. I loved how the beams seemed to carry into the house along with the foliage outside. I knew that the wood grain along with the reflection would make a great shot. I only took this shot on the scene to see how a shot would look from inside the porch on a later date when we went inside. I liked it so much that I made it the photo of the day.

Technical Data

I reverted back a bit here. Yesterday I posted a link about the ten steps of HDR. I basically did it to make fun of myself for how my progression to where I am now has come. This is an HDR shot taken in a new way for me. I guess I have been doing it for a month or so now, but it really seems to bring me more realistic results. I shot three bracketed shots at -2, 0,  and +2 on the scene. I then brought them into Lightroom with my other pictures from the day. From there I exported the RAW files into Photomatix to process them. I took the 32 bit image that I produced there, and brought it back into Lightroom. From there I could use the powerful sliders to get a result that I liked. I got the image to where I wanted it, and then I noticed that the copper decoration on the posts seemed too dark. I used the spot brush to lighten that up a bit.

Kelby Worldwide Photowalk

Here is that part of the post where I talk about the photowalk that I am leading on campus after the Wisconsin game in October. The date is October 13th to be exact, and the walk will start at 4 o’clock est at the Neil Armstrong Statue in front of the Armstrong Hall of Engineering. Over  1,300 photowalks are planned around the world. If you are not near West Lafayette then you kind find a walk near you on the Kelby site. Sign up now to be part of this event. Over 26,000 walkers have already signed up so far. You don’t have to be a pro (I am far from it) to attend. Any kind of camera is welcome as well. Here are a few links to the various sites which promote the event. If you want to sign up you should do so on the Kelby site in order to be eligible for the prizes though.
