Day 363: The Purple Flower

Photo of the Day

Over the course of this photo  366 project you have probably noticed that I am a bit of an expert when it comes to flowers. Take this one for example. When I first saw it I knew that it was a purple flower. No doubt about it. I really don’t know much about flowers, but I do like to photograph them. Take today for instance. I worked late, and when I got off of work it was a gloomy day. I tried to make the best of it though, and I went out when the rain slowed up a bit to get this picture of the raindrops on the purple flower (scientific name). It may not be the best work that I have done over the last 360 days or so, but a lot of what I learned went into the picture.

Technical Data

Part of the learning curve was to not HDR everything in sight. I actually have taken a few HDR pictures of this plant before. I read a great article this afternoon about the ten stages of HDR imaging. The article was tongue in cheek, but a lot of it hit home. There was a time (and for better or worse it played out on here) that I bracketed everything to make it HDR. I have come a long way from that, and the powerful sliders in Lightroom helped that out quite a bit. I just opened this up in Lightroom, and fixed a few of the issues that I used to use HDR for, but a bit more subtle than in the past. No halos around the flower, or grunge like textures. I think that I have come a long way.

Kelby Worldwide Photowalk

Here is that part of the post where I talk about the photowalk that I am leading on campus after the Wisconsin game in October. The date is October 13th to be exact, and the walk will start at 4 o’clock est at the Neil Armstrong Statue in front of the Armstrong Hall of Engineering. Over  1,100 photowalks are planned around the world. If you are not near West Lafayette then you kind find a walk near you on the Kelby site. Sign up now to be part of this event. Over 22,000 walkers have already signed up so far. You don’t have to be a pro (I am far from it) to attend. Any kind of camera is welcome as well. Here are a few links to the various sites which promote the event. If you want to sign up you should do so on the Kelby site in order to be eligible for the prizes though.
