Photo of the Day
Today I had some ideas for my photo of the day. I wanted to try and shoot the local high school football game this week to see if I could build on what I learned last weekend. I had two choices very close to me of venues to attend. I chose the West Lafayette Red Devils game that was just a bit closer to me than Harrison would have been. Just after I got to the game I captured this image of Tipton receiver Blake Hoover giving a West Lafayette player a stiff arm. In the camera I liked it, and I thought that it was a great way to start off the night. The action came right to me, and I was able to capture it. For the most part though I took my best shot right off the bat. The play never really did come to me much after that, and when it did this picture still trumped it. I could have stayed five minutes and gotten my shot. I did stay a while longer though, and I had fun watching high school football.
Technical Data
I had to let the action come to me because I was using the 70-200mm lens without the 1.4x teleconverter on it. I was having some trouble getting the shutter speed that I needed as it was without losing a full stop of light. I couldn’t figure out what had changed until I was out of the stadium walking home after the third quarter. I bought a UV filter this past week to protect my lens. I think that the filter might be blocking some much needed light. It won’t impact me tomorrow during the Purdue game, but it did cost me a bit tonight. An important lesson was learned. I did not have to alter this shot much at all. I did a small crop to it in Lightroom, but other than adding a little highlight and clarity nothing was done. I liked this shot enough that I really didn’t look through many of my other pictures.
Kelby Worldwide Photowalk
Here is that part of the post where I talk about the photowalk that I am leading on campus after the Wisconsin game in October. The date is October 13th to be exact, and the walk will start at 4 o’clock est at the Neil Armstrong Statue in front of the Armstrong Hall of Engineering. Over 1,000 photowalks are planned around the world. If you are not near West Lafayette then you kind find a walk near you on the Kelby site. Sign up now to be part of this event. Nearly 17,000 walkers have already signed up so far. Activity has picked up a bit on the Purdue sites even with the short time being posted. You don’t have to be a pro (I am far from it) to attend. Any kind of camera is welcome as well. Here are a few links to the various sites which promote the event. If you want to sign up you should do so on the Kelby site in order to be eligible for the prizes though.

Nice shot! I would be interested in seeing a tighter crop of this as well, although I can see why you cropped this one that way. Good work.
Thank you for your comments. I will have to try a tighter crop.
