Day 338: Salary Looking Ahead

Photo of the Day

Tonight I was back in my hometown of La Porte, Indiana to catch some of the action during the Notre Dame and Purdue game tomorrow. Tonight though I thought that I would try out my new lens during the Slicers game against Chesterton. I had heard that my old squad was bad, but it was still hard to watch. It was a bit easier through the lens though. I tried a couple of things including using the 1.4x extender to get me a bit closer. That worked alright, but I wanted the extra stop of light back. I thought that I needed it. This picture was actually taken with the extender on so maybe I didn’t need the extra light. I learned a lot in the short time that I shot tonight. One thing that I learned was that I love this lens! Everything is crisp as can be in the sweet spot. I thought that this shot of Charles Salary had enough going on to be the photo of the day. You have the running back looking for room. You have a lineman who has just been beat trying to hold to save the play. You have the backer trying to get in for the tackle as well. My favorite part has to be the turf flying around the frame. I have put a couple other shots up on my Facebook page from the game tonight if you want to see some more of the fun that I had.

Technical Data

This shot was edited a bit in Lightroom. I cropped it down just a little so that the frame was completely filled. I think that I described the camera setup above quite a bit. I had my 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and my 1.4x extender on when I took this shot. I used the middle section of my tripod as a monopod tonight as well. It worked well, but I always had a adjustment lever in my face. I may have to look into a good monopod next spring.

Kelby Worldwide Photowalk

Here is that part of the post where I talk about the photowalk that I am leading on campus after the Wisconsin game in October. The date is October 13th to be exact, and the walk will start at 4 o’clock est at the Neil Armstrong Statue in front of the Armstrong Hall of Engineering. Nearly 1,000 photowalks are planned around the world. If you are not near West Lafayette then you kind find a walk near you on the Kelby site. Sign up now to be part of this event. Nearly 15,000 walkers have already signed up so far. Activity has picked up a bit on the Purdue sites even with the short time being posted. You don’t have to be a pro (I am far from it) to attend. Any kind of camera is welcome as well. Here are a few links to the various sites which promote the event. If you want to sign up you should do so on the Kelby site in order to be eligible for the prizes though.
