Day 335: Turtles in the Sun

Photo of the Day

Today I finally broke down and took the 70-200mm 2.8 L series lens back to Berry’s Camera Shop here in Lafayette. I enjoyed using the lens, but two weeks of renting it was enough. That being said I walked out of there with the new version of the same lens. With rebates, my rental price taken off, and gift cards from my birthday the price was within my reach. This lens is rated higher than the one that I have been using lately. The L series lenses are really awesome, and they have really energized my photography. Today I knew that it would be a long day at work so I took a break, and spent about 20 minutes down by the Wabash. My original plan was to grab some dinner at home, but I really wanted to try out the new lens. Dinner could wait a while. I have a little spot that I have been hanging out at not far from where I spotted the bald eagle. I did not see the eagle today, but I did get some interesting images. When you sit by the river it is amazing looking around at everything that is going on.

This shot was never meant to make the blog. I took the picture to see how much detail I could bring out on the log from far away. This log was very small in my viewfinder even with the 1.4x extender on my lens. When I zoomed in on the scene I noticed that turtles were covering the log. It is a testament to the new glass to how clear these things look even zoomed in. I think that with some good glass in front of me my wildlife shots might pick up a bit. I grabbed a couple of cool bird shots from very far away as well. The 2x converter would really help out a bit more, but that is down the road a bit.

Technical Data

This section will be short today. All I did in Lightroom was to crop the picture. I liked the look right away, and nothing else was needed. Most of the other technical data was already covered. This was shot with my 60D and the new 70-200mm f/2.8L lens on it with the 1.4x extender on that. I expect that I will use the new lens a lot in the next week or so. I think that tomorrow I may have to test it out on some indoor sports. More on that tomorrow.

Kelby Worldwide Photowalk

Here is that part of the post where I talk about the photowalk that I am leading on campus after the Wisconsin game in October. The date is October 13th to be exact, and the walk will start at 4 o’clock est at the Neil Armstrong Statue in front of the Armstrong Hall of Engineering. Nearly 1,000 photowalks are planned around the world. If you are not near West Lafayette then you kind find a walk near you on the Kelby site. Sign up now to be part of this event. Nearly 15,000 walkers have already signed up so far. Activity has picked up a bit on the Purdue sites even with the short time being posted. You don’t have to be a pro (I am far from it) to attend. Any kind of camera is welcome as well. Here are a few links to the various sites which promote the event. If you want to sign up you should do so on the Kelby site in order to be eligible for the prizes though.
