I used to watch roller derby as a kid. I believe it was on TNN before it completely changed formats. It was fun and exciting. Imagine my wonder when I found out at the end of this winter that Lafayette had a roller derby team. As a photographer I knew that I wanted to attend a bout just to get some pictures. Last night was the third bout that I attended, and it was very fun. I only took pictures during the first half, but I felt that I had captured some moments which is what photography is all about. Roller derby is not a bloodthirsty sport, but every now and then you capture a look on the face of someone that makes it look worse than it actually is. I think that I captured that here as two of the Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls bear down on a Southern Illinois girl. I shot with my 50mm fixed lens because it gave me the most light possible indoors. That may have cropped out some of the heads, but the feel of the picture remains intact. This was by far my favorite of the bunch, and therefore is the photo of the day.
A link to my set from the bout can be found by clicking here, or just hitting the Facebook link on the bottom of the page. Enjoy the pictures and I hope to see you at the next bout!
