One Year With the Canon 7D Mark II

Shooting For One Year With the Canon 7D Mark II

It doesn’t seem like that long ago when I picked the Canon 7D Mark II for the first time. This was billed as the camera that will change everything. To some degree it really has changed a lot for me. Looking back on the last year you can see that many of my best photos were made with this camera. From the day that I purchased the camera it became my workhorse camera. The camera did not always lend itself to the photo that I was used to making so I found lenses that would help me make a similar photo. Instead of using a 24-70mm lens for basketball I would used a 17-40mm lens on this crop sensor body. I really leaned heavily on this camera in the past year. It has helped me win awards, and push my photography to the next level.

What I Like About the Canon 7D Mark II

This could really be a long paragraph. I think that I might just resort to bullet points to make things a little easier to read.

  • 20MP sensor
  • Canon LP-E6N battery that is compatible with my Canon 5D Mark III
  • 10 Frames Per Second
  • Great autofocus system
  • Great price compared to the Canon 1DX

What I Don’t Like About the Canon 7D Mark II

This section really boils down to one major point. This camera gets noisy very quickly. This past October I was shooting volleyball in a dark gym, and I ended up putting the camera back in the bag fairly quickly on the night. It really was not giving me what I needed in a dark gym. With that being said this is a crop frame body so you should not expect a full frame sensor’s ability to gather light. Now that I have the Canon 1DX I find that the 7DII only comes out of the bag when the light is very good. The other downfall of this camera is the dynamic range. Of course Canon is behind here with all of their cameras so it is not a problem with just the one camera. In the end there are a lot more positives with this camera than negatives.

More Photos With the Canon 7D Mark II

Below I have included some photos from 2015 that I made with the Canon 7D Mark II. As I said above the camera changed the way that I shoot sports. I tried to include a wide variety to show that it really can do it all when the light is right. Below you can find photos from baseball, football, hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and auto racing to name a few. You can also see some vacation and wildlife photos that I made with the camera. I also have used it for concert photography when I am back a little further than I want to be, and I need the extra reach. I have enjoyed using the camera, and I think it shows in the photos below.
